Slug Club House Points Standings – September 18th, 2014

House Points

Here are the House points as of yesterday, September 18th.

Gryffindor is off to a great start! The question is – can they hold on to it? Gryffindor started off high in the rankings last term as well but that wonderful energy did not last for long.  Hufflepuff has been quiet over the last two years, with members being more interested in having fun rather than worrying about the pressures of the House Cup Competition.

The real surprise is the current standings of Slytherin and Ravenclaw, winners of our first and second term, respectively. Historically, Slytherin did whatever was necessary to advance their position in the ranks, jumping in when the stakes were high and helping out the group leadership team in exchange for house points. Ravenclaw is our largest house and, with a high number of book club and discussion-based meetings this summer and school term, expected to be a tough competitor. Can these two Houses come back before the House Cup Competition comes to a close?

My First Wonderful and Magical Experience at LeakyCon

By Ashlynn Webb of Hufflepuff

Have you heard about the magic of LeakyCon? LeakyCon was started by the people who run a website called, “The Leaky Cauldron.” The site covers all news that is related to Harry Potter, like when J.K. Rowling wrote a new book and when Pottermore releases new and exclusive material. When the last book of the Harry Potter series was published, they got together and thought of a way for Harry Potter fans to meet other fans. One important factor in creating LeakyCon was they wanted it to be a community atmosphere, like what they had within their website. Thus LeakyCon was created! Read More

Slug Club Cookout!

Article by Justin Landers of Gryffindor
Photos by Terrea Riggs of Slytherin

Summer time. The temperatures are rising. The sun is out, the water is nice, and the vacation time is plentiful. So, how do you spend that time? With those who you enjoy the company of and care about of course! What better place to spend time together than a beautiful park?

That is exactly what we did on Sunday, July 13th. A group of friends, about 20 people in total, gathered at Bill Frederick Park for good food, games and fun. There was BBQ, Kabobs, cookies, cupcakes, drinks, and games. Plenty of laughs, and stories circulated about the new Diagon Alley area. Ridiculous times with “Cards against Humanity” were involved, and plenty of smiles, all while overlooking a beautiful lake!

Post-picnic a small group headed to Universal to continue to marvel in amazement at the new Diagon Alley area, and ride the new Escape from Gringotts ride.

Overall it was a phenomenal day with amazing people. All four houses were represented well, The weather could not have been better, and the company was fantastic. Special thanks to Micky Christmas Lee and Stephanie Shive for hosting and putting together the BBQ!

Book Club: Lev Grossman’s The Magician
July 21, 7:00PM

For the next book club meeting we will be reading NY times bestseller The Magicians by Lev Grossman!

“Quentin Coldwater is a high school senior, but he’s still secretly obsessed with a series of fantasy novels he read when he was little, about the adventures of five children in a magical land called Fillory. Compared to that, everything in his real life just seems gray and colorless. That changes when Quentin finds himself admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the practice of modern sorcery.

But magic doesn’t bring Quentin the happiness and adventure and meaning he thought it would—until he and his friends make a stunning discovery: Fillory is real. The Magicians is a grand, glittering fantasy that reinterprets the grand tradition of C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling in a brilliant novel for adults.”

Come meet with us to discuss the book, enjoy great company or even just to grab a drink and hang out! The venue was a huge hit at our last book club meetup so it will be the same time and place.

The Slug Club will also be doing a photo scavenger hunt during the con. Information for that can be found on Facebook or Meetup.com as well.

What does it mean to be a Hufflepuff?

By Slug Club member Arjun Govindan of Hufflepuff

Being willing to give the most and get the least. Work hard and honest and put your heart into everything you do. Where others may seek a greater glory, power, or wisdom; simply do whats right to do whats right, always.

Do what you do for love, in whatever form it manifests itself in. Be unafraid of toil, sweat and tears. Be unrelenting in what you do; dedicate your whole being into it. Never give up, even when all the odds are stacked against you.

The Weasley twins tested a new product called Weather in a Bottle and now this miniature golf course is stuck in between Winter and Summer. This will qualify for the Physical Strength and Tactics portion of your Auror Training. The cost is $14 for 18 holes. Parking is free.
