Roller Derby: A Magical Sport for Muggles

by Angelica “Helga Hufflepunch” Rodriguez of Revolution Roller Derby
A couple of years ago a good friend of mine asked if I wanted to go see a roller derby game. “A roller derby game? Like in Whip It?” she laughed, “Yeah, sort of.” So I got in the car, drove to Orlando and watched a brand new sport, still in its infancy, with admiration. A year later I would join the fray under my new alter ego: Helga HufflePunch. My life has never been the same.

Helga Hufflepunch

One of the greatest things about roller derby are the fun alter-ego, or derby names. You will find everything under the sun from Luna Shovegood, to Belligerent Lestrange, Phoenix Fawkes’m Up, Militant Bulstrode, and Helga HufflePunch (‘sup)… And those are just the Potter related names that came to mind.

So why am I talking about this muggle sport? Partly because I’m obsessed but also because your very own Slug Club is partnering with Thunder City Derby Sirens for their first Bi-Wizard Tournament on April 16! Unlike regular roller derby games, the Bi-Wizard tournament is a roller derby scrimmage, where skaters from all over Florida are put into mashup teams and play against each other. It is sure to be a blast! Never seen a roller derby game before? Do not worry, this guide is just for you!

For those of you not in the know, roller derby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world; the US alone has over 1,250 leagues. It has been around since the 1920s, but its modern resurgence is vastly different. The game is played on quad skates, on a flat track, with five players on each team: one jammer, and four blockers. The game consists of two 30-minute halves, each of which is broken up into 2-minute (or less) jams.

The jammers wear a star cover on their helmet and they score points every time they legally pass an opposing player. The blockers, who must skate together in a pack, try to stop the opposing jammer from scoring and help their own jammer get through the pack. Additionally, one of the blockers will also be designated as a pivot. The pivot wears a large stripe on their helmet and is able to score points if the jammer hands them their star cover, when this happens it is called a “Star Pass” or “Panty Pass.” The first jammer to break through the pack is designated as lead jammer, and while both jammers can score points at the same time, the lead jammer can call off the jam at any time.

Roller derby has an extensive rule book and contrary to popular belief, you cannot elbow someone in the face, or punch, or kick. I won’t get into the nitty-gritty, but it’s basically hockey rules when it comes to hits: you can hip check, shoulder check, and body check. It is one of the few sports where offense and defense are played at the same time, and it is AWESOME.

Derby is a predominantly female sport, but it has grown to include all-male leagues, co-ed leagues, and even junior leagues! The sport is really fun to watch and even more fun to play. Derby leagues are always looking for new recruits, volunteers, referees, and fans. If you are interested, chances are you have a league near you!

See you all on the track!

Book Club: Lev Grossman’s The Magician
July 21, 7:00PM

For the next book club meeting we will be reading NY times bestseller The Magicians by Lev Grossman!

“Quentin Coldwater is a high school senior, but he’s still secretly obsessed with a series of fantasy novels he read when he was little, about the adventures of five children in a magical land called Fillory. Compared to that, everything in his real life just seems gray and colorless. That changes when Quentin finds himself admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the practice of modern sorcery.

But magic doesn’t bring Quentin the happiness and adventure and meaning he thought it would—until he and his friends make a stunning discovery: Fillory is real. The Magicians is a grand, glittering fantasy that reinterprets the grand tradition of C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling in a brilliant novel for adults.”

Come meet with us to discuss the book, enjoy great company or even just to grab a drink and hang out! The venue was a huge hit at our last book club meetup so it will be the same time and place.

Join us on Monday April 14th for some mini-golf, and to put a stop to an atmospheric charm gone wrong! The Weasley twins tested a new product called Weather in a Bottle and now this miniature golf course is stuck in between Winter and Summer. The only way to cast the Finite Incantatem counter-spell is to play through the course, battling an enchanted snowman, a hungry clam, snow banks, and sand traps. (Don’t worry – Santa’s house elves have left you clues at each hole on how to break the spell.)

This will qualify for the Physical Strength and Tactics portion of your Auror Training. The cost is $14 for 18 holes. Parking is free. Disney Cast Members and Annual Passholders receive 50% off for themselves and up to 3 others. Slug Club members who offer their discount will receive an additional 20 House Points!

Meetup: Lumos et Nox – March 30th at 4:00PM

You know what your home needs? Some Harry Potter themed light switch plates. You might not notice it yet, but now that we’ve put it out there, you’re going to think about it every time you switch a light off and on. Fix that easily by attending the Slug Club meetup on March 30th at Central Park in Winter Park! Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind messing up, because we’ll be sitting on the ground (unless you bring your own chair) and painting.

Materials fees are covered for this event, thanks to a generous donation by Claudia of Gryffindor! We will provide paint, traditional toggle size switch plates and brushes. If your plate switches at home are different than the traditional plates you can bring them with you to paint.

Please RSVP by Friday, 3/28/14, at 10:00PM so we can be sure to have enough supplies. We will bring newspaper to lay down to paint on but you may want to bring a chair or blanket to sit on and maybe even a hard surface or old magazine to paint on.

This Valentine’s Day themed meetup will showcase our creative sides by making up silly pick up lines, writing perfected prose and poetry, and ‘chain writing’ where each participant has 2 minutes to write anything before passing it along to the next person. January 2014 Meetups!

January 10th – The Book Chooses the Wizard/Game Night

On January 10th, join us for “The Book Chooses the Wizard” book exchange. If you would like to participate, please bring in a wrapped book (used or new, just be prepared to part with it forever.) The books should be wrapped in paper and then a few words vaguely describing the genre or content of the book, like “Mystery”, “Love Story” or “Political Drama”.

*Cheap way to wrap it in paper – flip your leftover holiday wrapping paper inside out and voila! Instant plain white paper that you can’t see through. Please make sure to label all R- and X-rated books as “Restriction Section”.

You don’t have to participate to attend but everyone who brings in a book will take home a new book in return. For further information on the book exchange and for ideas on descriptions, please visit

The Muggle Liaison Office and the Department of Magical Games and Sports will be present with games to play during the exchange. Wizard’s favorite like Pottergories, Got Your Conk and Mad-Eye Moody-Libs.

January 25th – Second Annual Hogsmeade Weekend and Cosplay Day

Join us for The Central Florida Slug Club’s second annual Hogsmeade Weekend! January 24th-26th marks Universal’s Harry Potter Celebration weekend in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Don your wizard robes and join your fellow fans at the theme park! Universal’s Islands of Adventure will host a number of special events throughout the weekend with a limited number of spots open to local visitors. We’ll try to get in on some of the events but even if we don’t make it in, we’ll hang out, ride some rides, and enjoy the atmosphere of Hogsmeade. (Just don’t forget your signed permission slips!)

Actual meetup times will be determined as the schedule for the weekend is announced. We’ll likely do a dinner or drinks meetup later in the evening behind The Three Broomsticks and the Hog’s Head. Please keep an eye on the event page for further details. ( wouldn’t let me leave the start time blank, so it’s set for park opening right now.)

Please remember that Universal’s costume policy can be strict at times. If it’s sold in the park, you’ll be fine wearing it. Do not do anything to your face that makes it unrecognizable (no masks, nothing that drastically changes your facial features so you no longer match your l.D.) If anyone outside of the group asks to take your picture, please make sure they understand you are not a Universal employee (they’re usually okay with you taking it so long as you do not try to pretend to work for Universal.) Follow any guidelines given to you by park employees and be respectful to them at all times.

**This event qualifies for Auror Training’s Concealment and Disguise certification for anyone in wizard wear.
